April is the perfect month to talk about what is an Overcomer? An overcomer is a person who overcomes (to get the better of) something: one who succeeds in dealing with or gaining control of some problem or difficulty!
I want to look at the word “Over,” which can be used negatively or positively. Let’s look at it from the positive because that’s what we are: OVERcomers! So, it doesn’t matter if we’re feeling overwhelmed, overstressed, overburdened, overworked, or it seems we’re not getting victories with anything.
A RECENT SITUATION
For several months, I felt as if I had not received the full benefits from a business deal I had worked very hard on. I was excited and pleased at the end, but there was always this annoying feeling that I didn’t completely get what was due to me. Over and over in my head, I replayed every step I took in the agreement. Did I do everything I was supposed to do? Yes, I did. So why do I feel something is not complete?
Then, recently, while praying, reading, and meditating, I said, Father, You said I am victorious, and I am a winner. Suddenly, the revelation hit me! It wasn’t the end! It wasn’t over yet! I had not completed the race or crossed the finish line! Two weeks later, I received the rest of my compensation! I did win!
“But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
( Cor. 15:57)
WHY WE ARE OVERCOMERS
For Christians, this is the month when we celebrate the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ! His death, Resurrection, and our faith in Him cause us to be Overcomers and not just a survivor.
A survivor is “someone who copes (manages) well with difficulties in their life.” To survive “is to endure or tolerate” the struggle or situation.
However, the term “overcomer” comes from the Greek word nikaw, which means “to conquer, prevail, and triumph!” So you see, we, as Christians, aren’t supposed to manage difficulties. We are to triumph over them!
PERSPECTIVE
Many or all of us perhaps are facing some challenging situations. Situations that make us feel helpless, hopeless, vulnerable, or defeated. But even when we must endure difficulties for a season, as Believing Christians, we are never without hope for our final outcome! (Jer. 29:11)
We are created and empowered to win in every situation through Christ Jesus! He’s the only way to being an Overcomer and winning! They are part of our salvation benefits package.
“Bless and affectionately praise the Lord, O my soul, And do not forget any of His benefits;”
“He satisfies our mouths [your necessity and desire at your personal age and situation] with good so that our youth, renewed, is like the eagles [strong, Overcoming, soaring]!” (Ps.103:1, 5)
Did you know the eagle is the only bird that flies above storm clouds? God has given them specially developed features that enable them to soar at higher altitudes. God uses the eagle’s majestic beauty and power of their high flying to inspire and remind us of who we are and the position to take when facing life’s storms.
An Overcomer is ABOVE circumstances, NOT beneath them!
CELEBRATE WHO YOU ARE
As we celebrate the death and Resurrection of The Savior, Jesus Christ, this month, let’s remember He Overcame death so we can celebrate the victories with Him, regardless of the situation! It’s NOT the end until we win! Because we are “more than conquerors.”
TRUST AND SOAR
“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” (Isa. 40:31)
We are refined, stately, and magnificent! We hold our heads up, shoulders back, and backs straight as we soar high! We are Overcomers!
