A SECURE HOPE

Uncategorized

Hope can seemingly come from many sources: hope in having enough money, but having enough is comparative; hope in relationships, though they can bring disappointment; hope in the future and our dreams, but the future can bring uncertainty, and dreams can fizzle out over time; hope in education, numerous degrees, specific skills, or talent, but these, too, can’t guarantee lasting success… the list can be endless…

So, what is hope? Is it a deep wish for something?

One definition characterizes hope as “a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen, to cherish a desire with anticipation, or to want something to happen or be true.”

Bible Hope is “A Confident expectation IN God for a Favorable Outcome.”

A definition of wish is “to want something to happen or to be true even though it is unlikely or impossible.” It’s usually anchored to a strong personal desire from us.

Losing hope is a natural response when things don’t go as we expected or planned. It can be tough when we have invested significant time in something or prayed for someone or something, only to start with high hopes for a desired outcome, only to fall short. Eventually, it seems like it will never happen. I understand that feeling; it’s unsettling and can lead to uncertainty and doubt about whether there will be a happy or bright future.

I. Hope Based On Feelings Is Unreliable.

I believe we often rely too heavily on our feelings when hoping for something to work out. Feelings can change based on our situation, circumstances, or mood. A feeling shouldn’t be the driving force behind our hope. We must be intentional about not allowing our emotions to override our belief about the outcome.

II. Misplaced Hope Limits Your Possibilities

“Jesus replied, “What men find IMPOSSIBLE is perfectly POSSIBLE with GOD.” (Luke 18:27 PHILLIPS)

III. A Secure Hope

There is a Hope that serves as an anchor for our souls, enabling our minds to remain calm and free from fear. It keeps us steady and safe amid life’s challenges and the unexpected. This Hope must be joined to something lasting and reliable. None of the things mentioned in the opening paragraph are linked to anything or anyone that cannot be compromised in some way, which is why they can leave us disheartened.

“We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield.” (Ps. 33:20 CEB)

IV. A Promise From God Is A Promise Kept

There’s a quote I like: “If I want His promises, I have to trust His process,” taken from a book I’m reading, “It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way,” by Lysa TerKeurst.

The title fits perfectly in this post because that’s exactly what we say when situations don’t turn out exactly as we expected or planned. In addition to placing our hope in unpredictable sources, another issue is trying to figure out how everything will unfold — the process. God’s methods of doing things are far beyond what we can ever imagine. We must stop trying to determine God’s “course of action.”

“Let us hold on to the hope we say we have and not be changed. We can trust God that He will do what He promised.” (Heb. 20:23 NLV)

                                           V. A Secure Hope Requires Trust, Patience, and Expectation

Even when there is no evidence of change or progress, we must hold on to the promise and wait patiently, confidently, and with high expectations. Abraham was 75 years old when God promised him that he would be a father (Gen. 12). Against all odds, when it seemed hopeless, he still believed in the Promise made to him and expected God to fulfill it. It took a while, but he got that Promise and so much more.

“The Lord says, yes, that is correct. I am watching carefully to make sure that what I say will happen really happens.” (Jer. 1:12 EASY)

VI. Having Hope amid Chaos and Disappointment is A Choice

God does not intend for us to hope for anything unattainable!

“Here’s what I’ve learned through it all: Don’t give up; don’t be impatient; be entwined as one with The Lord. Be brave and courageous, and never lose Hope. Yes, keep on waiting — for He will NEVER disappoint you!” (Ps. 27:14 TPT)

VII. Hope In God Alone is The Only True Guarantee Of Fulfillment

“When hope’s dream seems to drag on and on, the delay can be depressing. But when at last your dream comes true, life’s sweetness will satisfy your soul.” (Prov. 13:12 TPT)

Thank you for joining me on my journey. I truly appreciate you, and may The Lord God watch over you, keep you safe, and give you peace.

Sincerely,

Jacqui
