COMFORTING WORDS

Uncategorized

What are words of comfort?

Growing up and attending a Home-going or funeral service, I often would hear a particular Bible passage read, which always sounded very sad. Or maybe it was the way people read it? Of course, it was a sad occasion, but when I would hear them start to read it, I would think, why do they have to read that? I was always sadder after it was read. The passage was Psalm 23.

PSALM = “A SACRED SONG OR POEM USED IN WORSHIP.”

Although hearing and reading it numerous times, it wasn’t until later in life and surely after my Christ conversion I began to understand that this Psalm is a personal testament of how comforting God is, whatever the circumstance. King David was a warrior, worshipper, and author of this familiar and uplifting Psalm.

PSALM 23 – COMFORTING WORDS

  1. My FRIEND and PROVIDER

The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need [will lack nothing].

2. My REST and REFRESHMENT

You let me rest [makes me lie down] in green pastures. You lead me to calm [quiet] water.

3. My STRAIGHTENER and RESTORER

You give me new strength [renews my soul]. You bring me back to life.

4. My GUIDE

You are true to Your name, and You lead me along the right paths.

5. My PROTECTOR and COMPANION

Even if I walk through a very dark valley [or the shadow of death], I will not be afraid because You are with me.

6. My DEFENDER and COMFORTER

Your rod and Your shepherd’s staff comfort me.

7. My JOY and EXTRAVAGANT GIVER

You prepare a meal for me in front [the presence] of my enemies. You pour oil of blessing on my head. You fill my cup to overflowing

8. My PRESENT and FUTURE BLESSING

Your goodness and unfailing kindness shall be with me all of my life, and afterwards I will live with You forever in Your home.

PERSPECTIVE

THE LORD is MY SHEPHERD

This statement implies the authority and authenticity of a personal relationship with God. You have submitted yourself to His authority and have decided that He has the final say concerning everything in your life. Some translations say, “My Best Friend” and Shepherd.

YOU ARE HIS, AND HE IS YOURS

The past few weeks have been hectic as I continue to move through this process of preparing my home for the market. My things-to-do list is growing. One of the checks on the list was my May blog post. But what do I write, and where and how do I find the time to write it?

Then, late one night, the calming, hopeful, not sad Psalm 23 came to mind. And this is how this post began. As I began to read, I immediately felt relieved of all my concerns. The reality of God’s love and commitment for and to His children’s wellbeing is extraordinary!

A GOOD SHEPHERD TAKES CARE of HIS SHEEP

As I continued to read, all the promises above brought more understanding of how affectionately God watches over us. He reinvigorates us when we are exhausted and weary and encourages us when we feel overwhelmed with concerns around us.

I encourage you to read Psalm 23. And I hope when you read it, you will see how you are well taken care of when He is your Lord and Shepherd.

Thank you for allowing me to share my journey with you. In God, we Trust and remember Jesus loves you.
